Pittsburgh Knights Player Donates Charity Showdown Winnings
PITTSBURGH, PA (January 22nd, 2019) – Jace Patras recently had a decision on is hands that not many people, let alone teenagers, usually face – where to send a $25,000 charitable donation. Rather than focusing on graduation, planning for prom, or worrying about what college to select, Patras’ responsibilities and decisions hold a bit more weight.
A little over a year ago, the 18 year old left his home outside of New York City and moved to Pittsburgh to become a professional video game player with the Pittsburgh Knights. As the captain of the Knights’ PUBG team, he decided to delay college, leave his family and friends, and complete his senior year of high school online. Since signing with the Knights in June 2017 Patras has traveled the globe, competed against the top esports teams in the world, and appeared before virtual audiences numbering in the tens of millions.
The Knights are a global esports company headquartered in Pittsburgh. This past December they made headlines after announcing a partnership with the Pittsburgh Steelers. They have teams and players in games such as PUBG, Super Smash Bros., Smite, and Fortnite, among others.

Last August, Patras, who is known by his alias or gamertag, “Voxsic”, led his team to the PUBG Global Invitational in Berlin, Germany. The tournament attracted 60 million viewers who watched via live stream. There, at a “Charity Showdown” event, he teamed up with Viva La Dirt, a group of Australian streamers known for their comedic videos. Together, they came in 3rd place, and Patras was awarded $25,000 to donate to a non-profit of his choice.

Giving the money to Children’s Hospital was an easy decision for Patras. With the Knights, he had already participated in Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation events such as Extra Life and Hack This Help Kids. Speaking of his decision to give to Children’s Hospital, Patras explained, “Over the past year that I’ve been living in Pittsburgh, I learned quickly that Children’s Hospital is a household name and an organization that really helps a ton of people all over the City.“

Joey Warren, Director of Cause Marketing at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation, is happy to be working the Knights, “Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation is proud to be the charity of choice of the Knights, and we welcome their entire community of gamers to the Foundation family,” he said. “Gamers helping kids just makes sense, which is why we are so grateful for their most recent gift to help the patients and families who need it most.”
Since 1890, UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh has been providing some of the best pediatric care in the world and has pioneered many technological and medical advances in the field. The Knights can think of no organization in the city better suited for the donation and are happy to move forward alongside such a great partner.
